Working With a Shed Builder in Scottsdale, AZ
If you’re looking for a shed builder in Scottsdale, AZ, I’m Alex, the owner and builder at Sheds Up. I build Custom, Standard, and HOA-friendly sheds on-site around different yards, storage needs, and budgets.
Because each shed is built in your yard, the materials can be carried through a suitable side gate instead of requiring a fully assembled building to be delivered. I personally build each project alongside my full-time team member, and you work directly with me to plan the details.
Scottsdale projects can call for very different solutions—from low-profile sheds designed around HOA height restrictions to larger custom structures. The 10×20 project below is a good example of what can be done when the job calls for something outside a typical storage-shed design.
Featured Scottsdale project
A custom 10×20
horse enclosure.
A Scottsdale project that shows what custom on-site construction can look like beyond a traditional storage shed.
This Scottsdale project isn’t a storage shed. It’s a 10×20 custom horse and pony enclosure built on-site with a gable roof, cupola, and 16-inch roof overhangs.
The larger overhangs give the roofline more depth while providing additional coverage around the structure. Half doors, window shutters, and the cupola give the enclosure a character that fits its equestrian use while still feeling like a finished part of the property.
Projects like this are a good example of the flexibility behind our Custom work. When the space or intended use calls for something different, the structure can be planned around the property rather than forcing the project into a stock design.

Need an
HOA-friendly shed in Scottsdale?
Scottsdale properties can have several layers to consider before choosing a shed location, including city setbacks, easements, HOA requirements, and property-specific development standards. Some Scottsdale properties also fall within areas with additional Foothills or Natural Area Open Space restrictions.
That makes it especially useful to plan low-profile and side-yard sheds around the property before settling on a size. We’ve built Scottsdale sheds such as a 16×6 Custom lean-to kept to 7 feet tall and a compact 6×3 shed designed around a 7-foot overall height.
If you have an HOA, send me its written shed requirements along with photos and rough measurements of the proposed location. We can work through the footprint, height, roof style, colors, and door layout before you submit the design for approval.

Do I need a permit for a shed in Scottsdale?
The City of Scottsdale currently states that residential, non-livable detached accessory structures such as storage sheds that are 200 square feet or less generally do not require a building permit. However, a site plan and review by Planning Services are still required, and the shed must meet the applicable zoning and setback requirements. Electrical or plumbing work requires permits regardless of the shed’s size. Check Scottsdale’s current accessory-structure requirements .
Where can a shed be placed in Scottsdale?
Scottsdale’s general accessory-structure rules do not allow accessory buildings within required front or side-yard setbacks. A detached structure can generally be located in the rear yard, subject to the property’s zoning, setbacks, easements, drainage requirements, and any development-specific standards. Confirm the requirements for your individual property before choosing the final shed location.
How close can a shed be to the property line?
Scottsdale’s general guidance says an accessory structure that is 10 feet tall or less may generally be placed as close as 2 feet from a property line when the location otherwise complies with the applicable zoning requirements. Taller structures require additional setback. Some developments and overlay areas have different standards, so the rule should be confirmed for your specific property.
How far does a detached shed need to be from the house?
Scottsdale currently states that most residential zoning districts require at least 10 feet between a detached accessory structure and the main structure. The R1-7 zoning district generally uses a 5-foot minimum. Property-specific development standards can be different, so confirm the requirement before finalizing the shed location.
Can I put a shed in an easement or NAOS area?
Generally, no. Scottsdale states that accessory buildings cannot be constructed within applicable easements. Properties within Environmentally Sensitive Lands areas may also contain dedicated Natural Area Open Space, or NAOS, where buildings are not allowed. Check the property information and applicable plans before selecting a shed location.
Does HOA approval replace Scottsdale’s requirements?
No. HOA approval and City of Scottsdale requirements are separate. A design may need to satisfy both. If your neighborhood has an HOA, send me its written shed requirements so we can account for items such as overall height, colors, roof style, and placement while planning the shed. Your HOA and the City make their own approval decisions. Low-profile examples are on the HOA sheds page.
Can you build a shed behind my side gate?
Yes. I build sheds on-site and can carry the materials through a suitable side gate instead of requiring a fully assembled shed to be delivered. We’ll check the access route and available working space before scheduling the build.
Do I need a concrete slab?
A concrete slab is not required for every shed. I offer a treated wood foundation and floor system, or we can discuss building on a suitable existing slab. I do not pour concrete slabs.
Where can I find prices and warranty details?
Current prices are listed on the Custom shed and Standard shed pages. Custom sheds include a 7-year warranty; Standard sheds include a 3-year warranty. For a Scottsdale quote, use the contact form.
